Lott Resignation Part II, or is it III?

Another day, another possible reason for Trent Lott's sudden resignation from the Senate with 5 years left to go in his current term. First there was speculation that he wanted to cash in on lobbying before Senate ethics laws change on January 1. Then, there were allegations of a brewing sex scandal. Now, Harpers is reporting that FBI agents raided the offices of Richard "Dickie" Scruggs in Oxford, MS. Scruggs is Lott's brother-in-law and some Mississippi newspapers have questioned whether Lott intervened to protect Scruggs from a recent criminal probe that resulted in the prosecution of several other Mississippi lawyers and judges with whom Scruggs was closely connected. There may be absolutely no evidence connecting Lott to any wrongdoing, but it will certainly fuel further speculation as to the reasons for Lott's sudden departure.
