I found out this afternoon that my position will be eliminated as of October 1, 2010. In other words, I've been laid off. I work with good people and it's been a great experience. I survived last year's round of budget cuts, but this year I wasn't so lucky. My employer is very generous to give me so much advance notice, but it still sucks.
I've been an attorney for over 20 years and have done everything. I was in the Army JAG Corps for many years before moving to Dallas and taking a public sector position here. If anyone knows of any opportunities, please let me know through comments, or through my email address which is is my profile. Thank you!
I am now having a cocktail. A big one.

That sucks! But knowing you, you'll turn this into a big opportunity!
Oh man, I'm so sorry to hear this bad news :-(
This is a cliche but I'll repeat it anyway.....when one door closes another opens. I was laid off after 22 years in my banking job. It was a shock to my system but it turned out to be the best thing that every happened to me. Everyone I know who has lost a job has went on to a better job. While not necessarily a higher paying job, the job itself was better. You will do well. Mark my words. You will.
Thank you everyone! Your coments make me feel better.
Glenn and I will stay alert. We hope you get a new job before Oct.
At least you can start searching for a new job these two months, while still being paid. Hope you find a good replacement...
Go for the job you really want to do. Even if it pays less. As long as you have enough to pay the bills, that is all that is important. Life is so much more when you have a job that you love. Go for it, you have nothing to lose.
Oh, Sammy. Just tried calling you. These guys are right: One door closes, a THOUSAND doors open. The challenge is choosing the right door to enter.
No matter how long it is before you get back on the career saddle, I hope you will enjoy your time off as much as I have. This has been The Best Chapter of my life. To paraphrase a Kevin Spacey line in "American Beauty," when I was downsized from a job that made me miserable (though I clung to it for dear life), it was as if I WOKE UP up after being in a coma for 20 years. Truly.
So, yes, it sucks. Yes, it's kind of scary. But, YES, it's a new beginning...and it will be a time for you to rest, re-evaluate, and make your life even better, happier, and more meaningful.
Act I is ending. Personally, I cannot wait to see Sam's Act II. And, Honey, if all else fails, with your Greek God-like body and looks, you always have porn to fall back on!
P.S. Dinner last night at 44X (where we went to brunch). Delish! THE BEST MEATLOAF EVER!
