Whatever Jerk, Granite Countertops Are Like So 2003 Anyway

A Baton Rouge, LA granite company called Southern Style Granite has refused to do business with a gay couple.  On August 8, two men entered the establishment, shopping for countertops.  They were asked by one of the owners if they were in a relationship, as if it was any of that nosey bitch's business.  They said yes and were told SSG doesn't work with "your kind" and were told to leave.  A representative of Capitol City Alliance tried to work with them and obtain an apology, but got nowhere.

I'm sure they're not bigots, but were just expressing their deeply held religious beliefs which we must respect.  My goodness, they're already victims since they've had to deal with those radical homosexual activists from Capitol City Alliance.  You can go here and find their contact information and express your love and admiration for these fine Americans.

Must be nice to have so much business in this economy that you can afford to turn it away.

Asshats.

I'm still surprised when I hear of these incidents but I know homophobia is still alive and well. About a year ago I was doing genealogical research on my maternal line. I heard that a cousin of mine, who I never met, had also done genealogical research. I didn't know his address or how to contact him but I did know where his uncle lived. I asked him for his address. This is the response I got "We don't have anything to do with him anymore, he's a queer." I thought I had a pretty thick skin after all these years but my jaw did drop. First thing I wanted to do was tell him that I was "queer" to and what does he want to do about it? But I held my anger because I really wanted to contact my cousin. The uncle gave me the contact information and I got in touch with my cousin. He was a godsend. He had a picture of my grandmother when she was a young girl. My Mother's mother died when she was only a year and a half old and she old had one picture of her. My cousin also had many other pictures of the maternal side of our family which he was glad to share with me. It turns out that my cousin is a well known food gourmet who publishes books and is a professor (Dr.) at a Philadelphia college. He is friends with Martha Stewart. And yet his family has disowned him because he is a "queer." Hate and bigotry, it never ceases to amaze me at its staying power.

I hope SSG goes out of business. Karma can be a b*tch!

A hopefully former activist, this sort of thing riles me right up.

Fortunately, friends like those I spent the last week at Blogorado with, particularly Ambulance Driver who brought this situation to my attention clear out here in the NW, help shatter MY stereotypes just by existing as the decent, ethical, tolerant, good-humored decent folks that they are...

The neanderthals at Southern Style Granite do, in fact (as do we all) have the right to be jerks in how they do business. They don't have the right to escape the consequences, as AD so rightly points out.
