Today's New York Times has a fascinating article on the underground gay community at West Point, recently brought to light by the resignation of Cadet Katherine Miller, a lesbian who could no longer justify the personal integrity sacrifices.
"The hiding begins on Day 1: new cadets must sign a document acknowledging that revealing one’s homosexuality can lead to discharge, as can demonstrating 'a propensity to engage in homosexual acts.'”

From 1960 to 1962 I worked at the NSA at Ft. Meade, Maryland. Up until I worked there, I did not know another gay person in the world. This was many years before DADT. This was back in the bad old days when all one had to do was accuse you of being gay and you lost your clearance. It's a wonder my friends and I got through 2 1/2 years with a top secret clearance.
The whole thing was ridiculous anyway. Their justification was that if you were homosexual you could be blackmailed by the Russians into revealing secrets but the only reason you could be blackmailed was because being homosexual was against the law. I think it's called a Catch-22. Well, anyway, we made it and the country survived this gang of gays in their midst during the Cuban Missile Crises.
Well put Ron.
