As first lady, she broke the mold. She spoke forthrightly on abortion, the Equal Rights Amendment, premarital sex and marijuana use. She was completely honest and open about her breast cancer at a time when nobody talked about such things. She won her cancer battle as well as battles with alcohol and prescription drug addiction. After the White House years, she founded the namesake clinic that has saved countless lives.
She celebrated her sobriety with a face lift. She looked fantastic.
She was once asked if she felt sorry for loosing her breast to a mastectomy. Her reply:
“No! Oh, no — heavens, no,” she replied. “I’ve heard women say they’d rather lose their right arm, and I can’t imagine it. It’s so stupid. I can even wear my evening clothes.”
What a gal.

Even when I was a young kid, I respected and loved Betty Ford, and my admiration only grew over the decades. Mrs. Ford's honesty has affected and undoubtedly saved countless lives.
I've pondered over the years if Gerald and Betty Ford were the Last Good Republicans...? The slide began with Ronald Reagan, yes? And now the Grand Ol' Party is defined by the likes of the Michele and Lady Bird Bachmann, Sarah Palin, and other Bible-Thumping Hate Mongers.
