A recent article in Religion Dispatches magazine explains the flawed methodology in a supposedly landmark "ex-gay" study. The study, conducted by Rev. E. Mansell Pattison and his wife Myrna Loy Pattison (not that Myrna Loy) of the Melodyland Church in Anaheim, CA, was published in the American Journal of Psychiatry in 1980 and has often been cited as proof that gays can become heterosexual. Michael Bussee, who participated in the study and now writes the blog Beyondexgay.com, explained to Warren Throckmorton why the so-called study proves nothing of the sort. An excerpt:
"But in an interview, Michael Bussee, who had been a leader at Melodyland at the time of the study, told me, 'We professed that we had been healed—past tense—because it was part of the theology to claim your healing in order to bring it about.'”
