Globe Noms!

It's Day 2 of Awards Season and I'm already exhausted!  I must press on.  The Golden Globes nominations were announced yesterday and, as Mitt Romney would say, they're zany!

Let's start with the annual "Serious Drama Nominated in the Comedy or Musical Category."  And the winner is....

My Weekend With Marilyn!  Yes, the touching drama about the doomed Hollywood goddess was nominated for Best Picture, Comedy or Drama and it's star, Michelle Williams, was nominated for Best Actress, Comedy or Drama.  I gotta tell ya, when Michelle's Marilyn was bleeding from a possible miscarriage and pleading with Eddie Redmayne to get help, it was a laff riot!  Nothing says comedy or musical like a zonked-out, tragic icon with only a few years to live.

Next up is the "That's Actually a Real TV Show?" award, and the winner is....

Necessary Roughness, which sounds like a Bert Reynolds movie from 1975 but is apparently a TV series on channel 1057 or something (it was also a Kathy Ireland football movie of all things).  The star of the show, Callie Thorne, was nominated for Best Actress in a TV Drama.  It'd be really cool if she won.  Seriously, I love WTF wins by near-unknowns.  At the risk of denigrating her talent, which I can't speak to since I've never heard of her before today, here are a couple of shots of Callie from the show, just in case you're wondering why the two 80 year old men from Slovenia who make up the HFPA noticed her:

Wait a minute, does one of those racks belong to Mehcad Brooks?  Necessary Roughness is the greatest show ever!

OK, you caught me.  This whole Callie Thorn bit was just a ploy so I could post a picture of Mehcad Brooks.  In fact, since it's my blog, I believe I'll post another!

Insert your own Golden Globes joke here.

Moving on....

The "I Thought That Show Was Cancelled Three Years Ago?" award goes to....

David Duchovny, nominated for Best Actor in a TV Drama for Californication.  How many years has that show been on?  I still haven't seen it, although Duchovny is rumored to have a huge hidden talent.

The award for "Blatant Pandering to Superstars to Goose the Ratings" goes to....

Madonna!  For what, you say?  Why for her Duke and Duchess of Windsor movie, H&M or whatever.  Madonna was nominated for Best Score and Best Original Song.  That's two nominations for Madge!

In the "Wasn't Madonna's Nomination Strange Enough?" category, the winner is....

Glenn Close!  No, I'm not talking about her nomination for Best Actress in a movie Drama for Albert Nobbs; that was expected.  Glenn was also nominated for Best Song!  It turns out Albert Nobbs has a song (I can't believe it wasn't nominated in the Comedy or Musical category) and Glenn wrote the lyrics!  Good luck Glenn!

Read all about it here.  More later if I can summon the energy.

Once again, I simply shake my head in sorrow that "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" was overlooked. I might already have reported, but I read that the screeners were not mailed to the GG or SAG nominators until the week prior to nominations...so who took the time to watch it yet?

"Marilyn"...sounds like loads of fun and laughs...right up there with, say, "Bridesmaids"!

I don't get the love for "The Descendants." But then I may be the only person in captivity who thought it was slow and just OK.

On the TV side...thrilled with "Downton Abbey's" noms. Go, "Downton!" Go, Dame Maggie! Odd to think Dame M is competing against Sofia Vergara, who is marvelous and charming in "Modern Family," but up for an acting award against the legendary Maggie Smith?

TV side...did you notice that last year's supporting actor, Chris Colfer, did not get nominated this year? Too bad. Yet did he deserve it, really? I think not. Per our previous e-discussion, I'm pretty done with "Glee!" I watch it, but I could easily cut it loose. That said, I did enjoy their holiday show this week.

Before leaving "Glee!"...Darren is simply DEMANDING that you and WK dash up for his opening night! PLEASE! It would mean so much to Our Darren!

Finally, Gentle Sisterly Advice Given In Love: Avoid pastels! Washes you out! I'm just sayin', OK? And while I'm at it...perhaps you should leave the "Bandage" gowns to the younger and...ahhh...less roomy girls...? Again, I say that out of Love and Devotion.

Loved your posting! I don't watch any of these shows and never heard of most of the actors but I thoroughly enjoyed your critiques of the nominations. You have a talent Sam. And...you also know of David Duchoveny's hidden "asset". Word does get around fast.
