OMG! Sag Noms today and Globes tomorrow! Award Season is upon us! This is Gay Blog Heaven! Let's get to it.
Frankly, for my money, all the SAG interest is with the ladies. The Best Female Actor nominees are Meryl for The Iron Lady, Glenn for Albert Nobbs, Viola for The Help, Tilda for We Need to Talk About Kevin, and Michelle (OK, perhaps she's the only one who still needs a last name) Williams for My Weekend With Marilyn.
Can we just agree that this, with maybe one exception, is the Oscar Best Actress roster? Maybe Charlize instead of Tilda, but otherwise this is it, don't you think? Sure, there are other highly acclaimed performances, but with so many heavy hitters, I think the field is set. So, let's just talk about Oscar. That's what we're all thinking anyway, right?
Meryl is way overdue for Oscar number 3. LC NY Bureau Chief reports that she gave a "great performance in a good film."
Michelle will be on her third nomination and richly deserves it for taking on the ultimate Hollywood icon and hitting it out of the park. Like Meryl, it was a bravura performance in a good film.
Viola brought an intense humanity to the role of Abilene. A lesser actress wouldn't have known what to do with it. Plus, she probably deserved it for Doubt.
Tilda is like no one else on earth and could win for any given performance.
Glenn will be on her sixth nomination without a win; her first in years. If anyone can claim the mantle of "it's time," it's Glenn. I have a feeling that this is Glenn's year.
Of course, out of the above-nominated films, I've only seen The Help and My Week With Marilyn because I don't live in New York or Los Angeles and the Important Films don't open in between until practically New Years.
OK, let's talk about the Supporting Ladies. There's Jessica Chastain and Octavia Spencer who were so fabulous together in The Help. Berenice Bejo for The Artist, Janet McTeer for Albert Nobbs, and Melissa McCarthy for Bridesmaids.
If anybody is having a year, it's Melissa McCarthy. A year ago, she was an unknown. This year, she has a hit movie, an Emmy, a knockout SNL gig, and now a SAG nom.
It's also been a big year for Octavia Spencer, who was that funny character actress whose name nobody knew until The Help came along.
Then, there's Jessica Chastain who is in danger of winning the Helen Hunt Overexposed Award, but probably won't because she's so good.
I'll be honest with you, I have no idea who's going to win this one. It's anybody's game and that makes it just too much fun.
As for the men, the Best Male Actor nominees are George Clooney for The Descendants, Leonardo DiCaprio for overacting in J. Edgar, Brad Pitt in something or other, Demian Bichir for A Better Life, and Jean Dujardin for The Artist. Dujardin and Bichir are compelling nominees. Otherwise, I'm bored.
The Supporting Male Actor nominees include Jonah Hill for that Brad Pitt whatever, dreamy Armie Hammer for anger-kissing Leo in J. Edgar, Kenneth Branagh who was brilliant as Laurence Olivier in My Week With Marilyn, Nick Nolte for Warrior, and Christopher Plummer who was so touching in Beginners. My heart is with Plummer in this one.
The best ensemble nominees were Bridesmaids, The Artist, Midnight in Paris, and The Descendants.
Oh yeah, there were a ton of TV nominations too, including Jessica Lange's deliciously demented Southern Belle in American Horror Story. You can check out the whole list here.
Whew! That was fast and furious because I hardly have time to post about the SAGS before the Globe announcements tomorrow! What do you think? Who was snubbed? Who will win? Who deserves to win?

Fasten your seatbelts, the award season is here.
It's all so thrilling! I am just so sad that "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" has not received any attention. The buzz is they only sent screeners a week ago, so the Golden Globe and SAG nominators still had not seen it.
As for Meryl...I think I said, or I should have said, she gives a TOWERING performance in a so-so movie.
Did you mean to write that Viola should have won for "Doubt" instead of "Guilt"?
My favorite films so far this year: "The Tree of Life," "Extremely Loud," "Hugo," "The Help," and "The Skin I Live In."
I am seeing "Shame," "War Horse," and "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday, respectively.
Also on my To-See list: "The Artist," "My Week with Marilyn," and "A Separation" (from Iran).
Have you talked to your design team yet about your SAG and GG ensembles? A Word to the Wise: No more pastels please! You need to go with a bold, daring color!
