Another Happy Couple
Sex and the City's Mario Cantone has married his long-time love, handsome actor-director Jerry Dixon. The ceremony was conducted by none other than Rev. Jay Bakker, son of Tammy Faye, who now has his own gay-inclusive ministry. Congratulations guys! Watch Mario break the news to his gal pals at The View:

Today in Adults With Unresolved Issues
Republican Congressman Trent Franks of Arizona calls marriage a "special right" for heterosexuals only. His argument is borderline incoherent, but basically he believes that my marriage will destroy America. Listen:
I'm sure Trent meant it with love, has gay friends, isn't homophobic, has nothing against gay people, etc, etc. Any insinuation that he shares a mind-set with the bullies who drive gay kids to kill themselves or that his words give cover to gay bashers is way out of line and I would never say such a thing. I also would certainly not encourage you to Google "Trent Franks Gay" and see how many hits you get. It probably wouldn't be fair to mention that he thinks African-Americans were better off under slavery than they are today, either.

Call Her Miss Ross
The other day, a high school classmate sent me and everyone in his in-box an email praising Herman Cain as the "most highly qualified presidential candidate in 50 years!" This guy is a South Carolina Republican and that primary is going to be awfully interesting, particularly now since Rick Perry has come out firmly against the proposed Confederate flag license plates in Texas. Incredibly, the Confederate flag is still a hotly debated issue in SC. Just a few years ago, it was taken down from the top of the State House and moved to a Confederate memorial on the State House grounds where it still flies. Perry's position will be unpopular with the GOP base in the state. The Civil War is still being fought in the Palmetto State in the year 2011. I wonder what Herman Cain's position will be? Remember when Rush Limbaugh jumped all over him when he said the name of Perry's hunting camp was "inappropriate?"
Political writers have been waiting for Cain's campaign to implode, siting chaos and disorganization behind the scenes. One staffer said it was more like a campaign for sophomore class president than President of the United States. This article lays it out, including this fascinating tid bit:
... there was that e-mail to the staff about traveling in a car with Mr. Cain: “Do not speak to him unless you are spoken to,” the memo said.
You'd almost think he was more interested in book sales and higher speaker fees than in being President.

Tony Perkins is Pro-Death
Tony Toni Tone Perkins, the spokes 'mo of the anti-family hate group Family Research Council thinks if you have sex outside of Christian marriage, you deserve to die:
"Mitigate the consequences of promiscuity." His words. The HPV vaccine was developed to immunize people against a virus that can lead to cancer and death. Thus, death is a consequence of what Tony terms "promiscuity." In other words, if you screw around, Tony believes you should die. How else can you interpret his words? This is from a man who claims he is "pro-life."

A First: Republicans in It Gets Better Video
For the first time, Congressional Republicans have appeared in an It Gets Better video. The New Jersey delegation, including Republicans Leonard Lance, Frank LoBiondo, and Jon Runyan, have made the video. It's about time. Way past time. Good for them, and the Democrats, Senators Frank Lautenberg and Robert Menendez, and Representatives Rush Holt, Bill Pascrell, Albio Sires, Donald Payne, and Steve Rothman:
When You're Too Crazy for Pat Robertson....
Pat Robertson, who has been crazy as a loon for decades, has actually called out the GOP presidential field as too extreme. Here it is:
This is the same Pat Robertson who called on God to kill liberal Supreme Court justices to create more vacancies; who said that men whose wives suffer from alzheimers should dump them so they can bang young chicks (I paraphrase); who said that God sent a hurricane to Florida because of Gay Days at Disney World; who said that the nation of Haiti made a deal with the Devil and that's why it was hit with an earthquake. I could go on and on and on with this old fool's extremism. He thinks Bachmann, Perry, Cain, et al. are going too far. This is like Marcus Bachmann calling a guy nellie.

Baby Love
Thank God for YouTube. Matthew Rettenmund at Boy Culture dug up this clip of a pre-Abba Frida Lyngstad performing Baby Love on Swedish TV in 1969. I love Frida, but this was not her best moment. It doesn't really matter though because the stage belonged to her unforgettable back up boys:
Monday's Man: Jan-Michael Vincent
This is a little something for LC reader Ray. He reminded me that this weekend was the 65th birthday of 70s heartthrob Jan-Michael Vincent.
From my research, it seems that Jan-Michael never owned a shirt. At least, he never wore one when a camera was near.
And thank God for that.

He is famous for being one of the first, if not the first, male Hollywood stars to do full-frontal nudity. It was the 1974 film Buster and Billie and it was shocking at the time. I'm sure none of my readers would be interested in seeing such a thing, but just for academic purposes, you can view Jan-Michael in all his glory at this VERY not safe for work link.

Quote of the Day
"Personally, I am praying that Obama's messaging improves drastically. (It has failed on multiple occasions - not the least of which was during August/September of 2008.)
The truth is that this President has done a good job in what has been one of the most difficult periods of modern history. He saved the economy from ruin (until the Tea Party took over Congress) with a stimulus that was as large as possible given the political realities, presided over a stock market that fairly quickly recouped many of its losses, presided over almost consecutive monthly increases in private sector job growth (unfortunately balanced by monthly decreases in public sector jobs which I attribute to the GOP further starving government), enacted the only meaningful healthcare reform ever in our history, passed financial reform (no matter what the Left says, he did this), saved the auto industry (which Romney is on record opposing), fired the first salvo of the Arab Spring with his address in Cairo no less, drawn down our footprint in Iraq in a responsible way (and headed toward almost total withdrawal), stopped numerous terrorist attacks in this country, stopped torture as policy, repealed DADT, joined the international community in a measured and responsible way to bring down an odious tyrant in Qaddafi, and killed a whole generation of al Qaeda leaders. And taking out Osama bin Laden the way he did will go down as one of the bravest military actions in American history.
I know this President is not popular, and it is very unpopular to defend him in such a way. I don't care. For this country to dump him for anyone on the other side would be a terrible thing. Progress is slow and painful, but we are doing it. Is that fashionable to say? No. Again, I don't care."

Quote of the Day
"The rejection of science seems to be part of a politically monolithic red-state fundamentalism, textbook evidence of an unyielding ignorance on the part of the religious. As one fundamentalist slogan puts it, “The Bible says it, I believe it, that settles it.” But evangelical Christianity need not be defined by the simplistic theology, cultural isolationism and stubborn anti-intellectualism that most of the Republican candidates have embraced."

Quote of the Day
"So often people will say someone needs to 'repent' from homosexuality. It is something that actually cannot be repented of! People are, or they are not, homosexual. It is an intrinsic part of their being or personally, my being. One cannot repent of something that is unchangeable. I have gone through a tremendous amount of grief over the many years that I spoke of change, repentance, reorientation and such, when, barring some kind of miracle, none of this can occur with homosexuality. The article today is a great example of how we as Christians pervert the gospel as it relates to homosexuality as though homosexuals aren’t welcome in the kingdom unless they repent (which many interpret to change). But since homosexuality is not “repentable” then we put homosexuals into an impossible bind."
--Former Ex-Gay Movement leader John Smid, writing on his personal blog last week. Smid also said that he identifies as homosexual and that he has never met someone who changed from homosexual to heterosexual. Then he addressed the tendency in the anti-gay industry to think of homosexuality solely in terms of acts:
“I used to define homosexuality or heterosexuality in terms describing one’s behavior. I thought it made sense and through the years often wrote articles and talked from that perspective. Today, I understand why the gay community had such an issue with my writings. My perspective denied so many facets of the homosexual experience. I minimized a person’s life to just their sexuality but homosexuality is much more than sex.”
When Herman Cain, Rick Santorum, or Michele Bachmann spew their ugliness about us, this is where they are coming from. To them, being gay is all about sexual acts, or more specifically, one particular sexual act that they believe defines us. It's profoundly ignorant, but many people believe it.
LC NY Bureau Chief Doug sent me this article about Smid titled "The End of the Ex-Gay Movement?" Certainly, this is a blow to the myth-based movement that seeks to change something it doesn't understand. Smid was the Executive Director of one of the oldest and largest of the ministries and now he's effectively admitting it was all false, and he is far from the first so-called Ex-Gay to come out and reveal the bizarre abuses of this quackery. But I don't believe for a minute that those who believe we can and should change will alter their positions one whit. To do so would be like pulling a thread that could unravel their entire fundamentalist belief system and few people are that brave. If they did, they would have to admit, as Smid has done, that we are fully-human children of God, and they are certainly not prepared to do that.

Monday's Man: Zachary Quinto
He's out! The handsome, brooding star of Star Trek and Heroes has come out on the pages of New York Magazine.
Discussing his role in Angels in America, he said the following:
“the most challenging thing I’ve ever done as an actor and the most rewarding” he says. Having to inhabit that terrible lost world, if only in his mind, took a toll. “And at the same time, as a gay man, it made me feel like there’s still so much work to be done, and there’s still so many things that need to be looked at and addressed.”
It's still a big deal for a high-profile actor to come out publically, especially a hot, good looking young actor who would be perfect as a romantic leading man. It's a gutsy move that says a lot about his integrity.
I predict that he will become more successful than ever.

New York's Next Bill Cunningham?
Our own Junior of Juice With Junior has a new tumblr blog (is that the right term?) devoted to New York's fashion street scene. It's called Wearing New York and I'm already finding it addictive. He has wisely resisted the urge to turn it into a hot guys site (well, maybe he hasn't totally resisted). Boy Culture invented the hot guys on the streets deal with the terrific Guydar series, so Junior is smart to create his own niche and explore his vision. Are we witnessing the birth of a new fashion maven? I'm seeing a future guest judge on Fashion Police. Street fashion correspondent for Hoda and Kathie Lee? Dare I say it, maybe a gig on this show?

Quote of the Day
“Children can’t see their budding lives through the long lens of wisdom — the wisdom that benefits from years passed, hurdles overcome, strength summoned, resilience realized, selves discovered and accepted, hearts broken but mended and love experienced in the fullest, truest majesty that the word deserves. For them, the weight of ridicule and ostracism can feel crushing and without the possibility of reprieve. And, in that dark and lonely place, desperate and confused, they can make horrible decisions that can’t be undone.”

Today in Adults With Unresolved Issues
Hate group leader Tony Toni Tone Perkins hosted California Republican Congressman Duncan Hunter (Junior) on his hate radio show today. Homo-obsessed Perkins, of course, couldn't wait to talk about the grave threat to the military posed by the evil fags:
"Perkins: Let’s talk about this issue here, Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, we knew a lot of this was going to happen, you’ve been pressing this issue from the very beginning. But just, I mean, days after this is signed into law, first we had the transvestites wanting to be allowed to come into the military, but now we have chaplains being ordered, or at least given the permission and of course we know what that means it means they’ll be pressured, to do same-sex weddings on military bases. Are they moving faster than you thought they would?
Hunter: No, in fact this is exactly what we knew would happen. We’re not especially clairvoyant, we can’t see into the future, but the homosexual lobby isn’t simply pressing to have equal status in the military with people that are heterosexual. They would like a military takeover by the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender community, and that’s what they’re going to keep pushing for until it happens."
Holy crap! How did Duncan find out about our plans for a "military takeover!?" Did someone infiltrate our secret gay lifestyle meetings? Alert Ellen that there's been a security breach! Damn, now all our plans are up in smoke. Think of what could have been:
A revival of Gypsy starring Rosie O'Donnell, with performances in the Pentagon Center Courtyard.
SecDef's offices re-done in mid-century modern.
Gay soldier couples snapping up fixer-uppers in that charming transitional neighborhood in Kandahar.
Ladies' Lounge at the Officers' Club featuring leather recliners, big-screen TVs turned to ESPN, and artificial flower arrangements.
Men's Lounge at the Officers' Club designed by Philippe Starck.
All branches of the military scrap individual uniforms and adopt Navy whites.
The A-List Baghdad!

RIM Job
I recently switched from a Blackberry to an HTC Android device like this one, and apparently I did so just in time. I still have a work Blackberry which wasn't much use during the recent outage. There was a lot to like about my old 'berry, including the fact that it got better reception than the Android. I could get a signal anywhere, underground parking garages, building sub-basements, all kinds of nooks and crannies. But I feel like I skipped several generations with my new phone. Now that Blackberry has had a major service interruption right on the heels of Apple's new phone announcement, how much longer before Apple and Android become the last smart phones standing?

"Huntsman I can understand and appreciate. Perry is an empty bad suit. Romney lies with such facility it unnerves me. Bachmann is a fanatic, as, although I am extremely fond of him, is Ron Paul. Santorum just seems like a lost child from the 1950s, trying to have the campaign he dreamed about when he was ten. Cain is an egomaniac businessman with a talk show host patter and a mild wit. Gingrich is a giant, gasseous asshole."

Frank Kameny: 1925-2011
Frank Kameny, the fearless gay rights pioneer, has died of natural causes at the age of 86. The man who came out when no one was out died on National Coming Out Day.
Kameny began standing up for our rights over 50 years ago, when it was quite dangerous to even acknowledge being gay. He was a Harvard PhD who was fired from his U.S. Government job for being gay, but he fought back. He protested his firing and took his case to the U.S. Supreme Court in 1961. 1961! The Court denied his petition, but his was the first civil rights case based on sexual orientation. He did not give up the fight. He founded The Mattachine Society of Washington and protested the government's treatment of gays. He ran for Congress. He coined the phrase "Gay is Good." In 1963 he began campaigning to overturn DC's sodomy laws, and the bill he personally wrote finally passed in 1993. The signs he carried while picketing the White House for fair treatment of gays in 1965 are now on display in the Smithsonian. There is much more, and you can read about it here and here.
Frank Kameny lived a life of courage and accomplishment. We all owe him a huge debt.

"There's a Global War on the Right of Gay People to Live and Love"
Elton John and Johan Hari have written an important article on Huffington Post about the growing movement around the world to terrorize, imprison and murder gay people. The article pulls no punches and addresses the role of Americans in stirring up murderous homophobia abroad. There is a new organization called Kaleidoscope that seeks to provide direct help to persecuted gays around the world, or as Elton put it, "the global Stonewall riot has begun."

Santorum: DA/DT Must be Overturned So Hetero Soldiers Won't Know They're Showering With Homo Soldiers
Rick Santorum obviously spends a great deal of time thinking about gay men in showers. He got into it on today's Fox News Sunday when Chris Wallace brought up Santorum's favorite topic of men showering together. Santorum took the bait:
"The problem is that sexual activity with people who you are in close quarters with who happen to be of the same sex is different than being open about your sexuality."
So showering with gays is OK as long as you don't know they're gay? Either way, you're still showering with gays, Rick. I was in the Army for 12 years and was in many group shower situations, yet somehow I was able to control myself. It's called maturity, little boy. Most men learn to control themselves during puberty.
Chris Wallace then pulled a gotcha question on him, quoting a "social experimentation" comment from a general in 1941 who opposed racial integration of the military. This gave Santorum an opportunity to explain that race isn't the same thing as homosexuality, which nobody actually claims, and to endorse ex-gay therapy. Here's the clip, if you have a strong stomach:
Reducing gayness to sexual acts is a way to dehumanize us so that the demonization can be justified.

Jesus Endorses Perry
“There are a lot of Christian voters who don’t want to appear bigoted, and so what they say to the pollsters is not necessarily what they’ll do in the privacy of the polling booth. If Governor Romney is the nominee, I believe Barak Obama will be the next president.”
--Pastor Robert Jeffress of the mega church First Baptist Dallas, seemingly admitting that many Christian voters are in fact bigoted against Mormans and just don't want to say so. Jeffress was responding to questions about his earlier statement that Mormanism is a cult and “every true, born-again follower of Christ ought to embrace a Christian over a non-Christian.” Jeffres said “for evangelical Christians, there really isn’t any other choice” than Rick Perry."
The Perry camp responded with a strong condemnation of the religious bigotry expressed by Jeffress:
"Gov. Perry does not believe Mormonism is a cult."
OK, maybe "strong comdemnation" was over stating it. Maybe "trying real hard not to upset Jeffress" would be more accurate.
Jeffress' greatest hits include his famous sermon "Why Gay is Not OK" which he put on the marquee outside his downtown Dallas campus in 2008. Here is a picture of Jeffress:

Lesbian Family Harassed at TX State Fair; Receive Apology
The Dallas Voice is reporting that a lesbian couple and their seven year old daughter were subjected to a homophobic tirade by a so-called Christian manning a booth at the Texas State Fair in Dallas. Latisha Pennington and Dondi Morse said they were walking through the fair with their daughter when a man from something called Full Gospel Businessmen’s Fellowship in America called the family over. The man told them they would go to hell for being homosexual and threw out misused Bible verses at them. Not that it matters, but Pennington and Morse were not holding hands, kissing, or showing any sort of affection. They were just two women and a child, a child who was forced to witness her parents being told they were going to hell. I suppose the Full Gospel guy has sharp gadar.
The ladies did not take this sitting down. They complained to fair officials who apologized and offered them free tickets for a return visit. They then contacted The Voice and former Dallas city councilman Craig Holcomb, who is openly gay and runs the Friends of Fair Park. Holcombe called back to let them know that the Full Gospel homophobe won't be working the booth any more. That's probably a good thing too. This Saturday is Gay Day at the fair and his head might explode. Latisha and Dondi also got a signed letter from the Full Gospel National Director, Roy Brian. It's not really an apology, but I suppose it's a victory that he felt he had to take time to deal with the lesbians.

Palin's Not Running for President
Apparently a synapse fired in Palinland because Queen Esther has decided not to run. Oddly, she announced this MOST MOMENTOUS DECISION OF THE AGES through a letter to her supporters. A paper letter. Not a news conference, not a YouTube clip, not even one of her ghost-tweets. Snail mail to her "fans," whoever they are. The letter said blah, blah, blah, God, blah, blah, blah, family, blah, blah, blah, country, it doesn't really matter. Palin's over. Actually, she's been over. Did you notice that in the past few months two Palin documentaries, one pro and one con, opened in theaters? No? Neither did anybody else. Did you read the Joe McGinnis book The Rogue? No? I did and thought it was terrific but few others did. Did you read Bristol's book? Levi's? Neither did anybody else. Why is nobody buying anything about Palin anymore? Where did her fans go? Where did her detractors go? They stopped caring. Nobody cares about Sarah Palin anymore. The rest of America finally realized what Alaskans realized long ago and moved on. She's the Paris Hilton of the north. She had a good ride and it's over. I hope she saved her money.
Steve Jobs: 1955-2011
Steve Jobs, one of the inventors of the 21st Century, has died at the age of 56. The cause was pancreatic cancer. The adopted son of a high school drop-out used car salesman, Jobs himself dropped out of Reed College after six months. He and high school friend Steve Wozniac tinkered around with electronics, building crazy things like circuit boards, until they launched Apple out of Jobs' parents' garage. The rest is history. He is survived by his wife Laureen and his daughter, Lisa.

"I support gay marriage because I'm a Conservative."
--British Prime Minister David Cameron, speaking to the Conservative Party Conference. Read the rest. It expresses what I've long believed. Support for marriage equality is a deeply conservative position.
Now, imagine a leader of America's supposed conservative party making such a statement.

I Will Not Be Watching the A-List Dallas
Sure, The A-List New York is mind numbing drivel, and the promos for the Dallas series made clear that the cast was a bunch of Z-listers from Oklahoma, but I was going to at least watch an episode or two. If nothing else, it might be fun to spot the local landmarks, right? Wrong. It seems that homophobic, FH wannabe Ann Coulter will be a guest star. I will not watch a bunch of self-loathing queens preen over that emaciated bottle blonde, laughing as she insults all of us, reinforcing the negative and false stereotype of Dallas gays as Republican lapdogs. At least the New York show was harmless drivel. The Dallas show is turning into something mean as well as dumb.

Fox "News" Interviews Guy in Funny Hat at Wall Street Protest
And lives to regret it. The guy is smart and articulate.
When this Fox "reporter" saw a guy in a funny hat at a protest, he probably associated him with tea party nitwits who wear funny hats. Oops.
Via Dan Savage
UPDATE: The smart guy's name is Jesse LaGreca and Fox hasn't aired the footage, despite the producer's word that he could put any message he wanted out there and they would give him fair coverage.
Fair and balanced.

I Want to Buy Thomas Jane a Sandwich
I've always thought Thomas Jane was perfectly cast as a call man in Hung, but I had no idea how right I was. In Sunday's LA Times, Jane revealed that, when he was an eighteen year old newcomer to Hollywood, he "wasn't averse to going down to Santa Monica Boulevard and letting a guy buy me a sandwich." In other words, he turned tricks for guys. He went on to say the was exploring his sexual identity and "chose" to be hetero "because that's what my DNA dictates and my nurture dictates that I am."
I'm not sure I buy his choice to be straight when it was in his DNA, but he gets big props in my mind for not living in shame for his past.

Monday's Man: Mike Ruiz
News Flash! Mike Ruiz is leaving the mind-numbing A-List New York. Click here to listen to him talk about the show, his photography career, and even Kathy Griffin.
I always wondered why he was on that show in the first place. He was the only one who had a straight-face claim to the real A-List, and was the only one who didn't try to flaunt a fake fabulous lifestyle for the cameras. He seemed like a drama-free nice guy, so I never bought that his circle of friends included a crew of preening, catty poseurs. Except Rodiney. Rodiney and Mike were the only ones who came off as genuine.
Now, may be he can spend more time with his handsome boyfriend. What a gorgeous couple.

Seen at Tom Thumb, October 2, 2011
Egg nog and Silk Nog, which sounds like an abomination if I've ever heard one. When are stores going to start leaving the Christmas shit out all year?
In case you're not from around here, Tom Thumb is Safeway.

"No gifts please, just nice thoughts for Caspian, humankind, the planet, and the universe!"
--From the Birth Announcement of baby Caspian, the son of Congressman Jared Polis and Marlon Reis. Polis is the first openly gay member of Congress to become a father. Call it a sea change.
