My Message to a SC Santorum Supporter

An old friend from college who lives in South Carolina recently updated her Facebook status to express her strong support for Rick Santorum in the upcoming primary.  Unlike Rick, she actually has gay friends, including me and our friend Philip.  Here was my message to her:

"I really wish you would rethink your support of Rick Santorum.  You were so great when I came out to you.  I know you see us a human beings, but Rick does not.  His anti-gay rhetoric is vicious and dangerous.  So many ugly comments to choose from but the latest is that kids with a father in jail are better off than kids with gay parents.  Do you believe that a child would be better off with a father in jail than being raised by Philip or me?  He has called us a threat to homeland security and a cause of the recession.  Do you believe that my monogamous committed loving relationship of 12 years with my disabled husband caused the recession?  It's nonsense, but dangerous, demonizing nonsense.  He would like to see us turned into criminals and all our marriages voided.  It would be a horror show for gay Americans like me and Philip if he became president.  He is by far the worst Republican running on gay issues.  He calls gay issues "policy issues" but for me, it's my life, my love and my family.  It's personal.  Please think about it.  Sam"

Well said Sam. It is incredulous to me than any fair minded person would support Santorum's candidacy for president or any other public office. The voters of Pennsylvania who voted Santorum out of office by 18 points had a good reason, he is an unapologetic homophobe whose goal is it disenfranchise all the GLBT community for relationships and sexual activity. He may present a pleasant, countenance (not to me though) and an open personality but he is evil beneath the surface. He is dangerous. What I am afraid of is that he will be nominated for Vice President and through some fluke the Republican nominee will be Romney who wins. I didn't things could get worse than Bush but at least he wasn't a homophobe like Santorum.
