Like all good gays everywhere, I eagerly watched Smash last night. What did you think? Was it Smashing or Smashed? In case you DVRed it and haven't watched yet, I'll put a few comments after the break.
My brief, scattered thoughts:
I liked it. I can't say I loved it. It was no Glee pilot, but it has the potential to build to something great, so I'll keep watching.
It was more of a soap opera with a Broadway setting than a show about Broadway, know what I mean?
Debra Messing was terrific. I think she's matured into a more interesting actress since her Will and Grace days.
Anjelica Houston is obviously the Joan Collins of the show, slinging cocktails in faces and stalking around like she owns New York. She has a compelling story line and I'm really interested to see where her character goes.
Without question, I would cast Megan Hilty over Katherine McPhee as the lead in the Marilyn musical. She's perfect for the role, has been in on it since the beginning, and was even the star of the leaked "You Lenz" clip. She belts, she dances, and she's gorgeous so what more are they looking for? I was not wowed by Katherine's warbled "Don't You Bring Me Down" audition that apparently brought the smarmy director's pants to attention.
Speaking of the smarmy director, Jack Davenport is well cast as the sexy man you shouldn't trust, but how naive is Katherine McPhee that she had no idea why he invited her to his spacious Manhattan loft in the middle of the night for one-on-one rehearsal? Plus, are we to believe that her boyfriend wasn't even slightly peeved that she leaped from her post-coital chest-stroking to dash off to another man's apartment?
Did you notice how everyone in Manhattan seems to live in gigantic apartments filled with over-sized Viking appliances and grand pianos? I need to sell my house in Dallas and move to Manhattan so I can stretch out and get some room.
Katharine McPhee's relationship is obviously doomed. Raza Jaffrey is adorable, apparently rich (who knew NYC municipal government paid so well? I need to send Bloomberg my resume), successful, with a sexy accent and well-groomed armpits. In other words, he's too perfect to remain a soap opera boyfriend for long. How long before the stress of stardom comes between them?
Brian D'Arcy James is a terrific actor so I hope he gets more to do than be Debra Messing's nagging househusband.
Brian and Debra's adoption will never happen.
I think Christian Borle's character has a lot of potential. He plays Debra Messing's partner who seems to know a lot of hot dancing boys. There's definitely something going on beneath the surface that will hopefully be revealed as the show progresses. I predict that he'll have an awkward affair with his cute new assistant, Jaime Cepero. Jaime's too good looking to spend the entire series screwing up adorably and looking awestruck that he's working on Broadway. I thought I'd spit up my popcorn when Debra Messing pronounced him "very straight." Straight to the bath house maybe. Did she learn nothing from Grace?
Those are some of my initial thoughts. What are yours?

I forgot to DVR it. That says a lot right there but as Sat night has become a night of repeats of the week, they'll be showing Smash at 8pm Sat.
Maybe I'll remember this time.
We just finished watchiing it. It is good. We hope it does well.
I didn't watch it. Maybe it was good, maybe not. I was turned off by all the promotion. With all that promotion I detected a problem. "There's something about her"..."Showtime!" , etc. Ugh. So gay. Maybe it's my lace of the Showtime Gay Gene.
It was was OK. I will continue to watch...for a while. Still, I didn't find it compelling. Initial thoughts...
** I liked the wonderful song at the end of the show...think it's called "I Want to Be Your Star" or something.
** I've never been a big fan of Katharine McPhee. A little vanilla for my taste.
** The blond one, Megan Hilty (?), now that girl is NOT vanilla. There is Marilyn.
** Choreography...fagulous.
** Director character...asshole. Thought that apartment scene was cliche.
** Lastly but very, VERY importantly: I like the Indian boyfriend with the British accent. What is it about brown nipples, especially when accompanied by hairy pits...?
We will see. As I tend not to watch much TV, this may be a show I cut loose.
And what did YOU think, Chief?
I finally watched this and literally yelled to myself today "I have to go back and read Sam's thoughts!" because I had saved this post til I watched. I thought the production values were amazing. The writing was ridiculously bad "Marilyn was all about love." Really? Is that a fact?
I also thought some of the actors were miscast. Just like Jack Davenport's hair. Debra M and Megan H are the reasons to watch. And side question: why even consider McPhee when they want a Big Star to play Marilyn in the first place? Her resume is lighter than MH's.
Can you do little updates as I don't think it's appointment TV for me?
