You read that right. Dozens of prominent Republicans have signed a brief supporting the right of gays and lesbians to marry and the document will be filed this week in the Prop. 8 case currently pending before the Supreme Court. The Republicans include two sitting members of Congress, Ileana Ros-Lehtinen of Florida and Richard Hanna of New York, as well as Former Utah Governor Jon Huntsman, Meg Whtiman, who ran for Governor of California, and numerous top officials in the George W. Bush and Reagan administrations. From The New York Times:
"The brief argues that same-sex marriage promotes family values by allowing children of gay couples to grow up in two-parent homes, and that it advances conservative values of 'limited government and maximizing individual freedom.'”
OK, only a couple of the signatories actually hold public office currently and are taking any kind of real risk, but I welcome anyone who supports the cause.
